ENGAGING THE MIND AND THE HEART: EFFECTIVE QUESTIONS AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE IN THE MUSIC STUDIO

Workshop

Learning and performing music involves deep levels of mental and emotional engagement from the performer. This workshop explores how teachers can use effective questions in the lesson to help students reach higher levels of mental engagement. This workshop also explores how music pedagogy can facilitate the development of emotional intelligence, enhancing the creative outlet that attracts so many to music study.

SOUNDSCAPES: EXPERIMENTING WITH 20TH CENTURY SOUNDS THROUGH INTERMEDIATE REPERTOIRE

Workshop

In the 20th century, compositional styles splintered into an endless array of works that represent 12-tone serialism, minimalism, and neoclassicism as well as experimental musical notation and prepared piano. Contrary to this stylistic diversity, much of our twentieth century piano repertoire for intermediate students does not reflect the many compositional styles truly present in the 20th century. This workshop will explore "Soundscape" repertoire for intermediate pianists that can facilitate a student’s journey through this multiplicity of compositional styles.  Integrating these works with our existing teaching repertoire can not only advance student technique, but also invite elements of creativity and imagination that will lead to an even greater level of musical inspiration in their music study.

MAKE 'EM SOUND GOOD: TEACHING LEAD SHEETS TO INTERMEDIATE STUDENTS

Workshop

Lead sheets have become standard part of music notation in pop, rock, musical theatre, and contemporary sacred settings. These lead sheets are an amazing way to help students quickly sound skilled at the piano; however, teaching this skill is overwhelmingly lacking in many piano curricula. This workshop will look at methods and resources for teaching lead sheets to intermediate piano students using popular, sacred, and show tune music! Teachers and students alike will enjoy the freedom and creativity afforded by incorporating this skill into their music study.

JACK KILPATRICK: OKLAHOMA'S CHEROKEE COMPOSER

Workshop

Jack Frederick Kilpatrick (1915-1967) was an Oklahoman composer of Cherokee descent who wrote nearly 550 works for orchestra, voice, piano, or chamber ensemble. Kilpatrick's music blends a number of stylistic influences such as Americana and Native American music. The manuscripts for Kilpatrick's piano music were discovered in 2018 at the University of Oklahoma and are now archived in OU's Western History Collection. This workshop will discuss Kilpatrick's life and many of the significant pedagogical piano works from the recent discovery of his music.
