Dr. Hayden Coie, NCTM, is a classically trained pianist and music instructor based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He currently works as Adjunct Professor of Piano at Southern Nazarene University and Oklahoma Baptist University where he teaches applied piano, group piano, and piano literature courses. Additionally, he also maintains a private studio at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, where he also serves as a staff pianist and vocalist. Outside of music, Hayden enjoys cooking, exercising, and spending time outdoors. He has a close relationship with his family and network of friends and believes that a balanced life aids in developing true artistry.


When he began his musical studies at the age of eight, Hayden used his allowance money to pay for his first piano lessons. At age sixteen, he began advanced training with Prof. Deborah McClung-Guillory at the University of Louisiana – Monroe and eventually transferred to Baylor University. At Baylor, he completed a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music degree in Piano Pedagogy and Performance. During his time at Baylor, he studied piano with Dr. Terry Lynn Hudson and piano pedagogy with Dr. Lesley McAllister. In 2022, he received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Oklahoma where he studied with Dr. Jeongwon Ham, Dr. Barbara Fast, and Dr. Jane Magrath.

Hayden’s performance experience includes solo literature, chamber music and piano ensemble repertoire. He has appeared in recitals in many parts of the United States, as well as internationally in Austria and the United Kingdom. He has been a performer and participant in several music festivals, including Rocky Ridge Music Center’s Young Artist Seminar, the Eastern Music Festival, and the Classical Music Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria.

As a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCMT) in piano, Hayden remains active as a piano instructor and currently maintains a private studio in Oklahoma City. Having taught privately in three states, he has experience with virtual and in-person private lesson and group piano for all ages and skill levels. His previous teaching experience includes serving as director of the Norman Fine Arts Academy, adjunct instructor of piano at Randall University, and graduate teaching assistant in piano at both Baylor University and the University of Oklahoma. In 2019, Hayden collaborated with the OU Oscher Lifelong Learning Institute to create a group piano course for senior adults in Norman, Oklahoma. While pursuing graduate work at Baylor, he also worked with the Baylor Continuing Education Department to establish a group piano curriculum for adults in the Waco community.

​Hayden’s research interests include piano literature and mental/emotional wellness for teachers and musicians. His work has been published in Clavier Companion, Texas Music Teacher,  American Music Teacher, and the MTNA e-Journal. His DMA dissertation explored several unpublished intermediate piano works by Jack Frederick Kilpatrick, the first Cherokee composer to write for solo piano. He also enjoys giving presentations and has been invited to speak nationally at the MTNA National Conference, CMS National Conference, and the National Group Piano/Piano Pedagogy (GP3) Forum, and regionally for the OU MTNA Collegiate Chapter, Norman-Area MTA, Waco Music Teachers MTA, and others.
